Our rescue world is full of heart breaking stories. Sadly things are so bad we have a feeling there will be more of these stories in the weeks and months to come. We wish we could change things for every dog in need but have to focus on the ones we can help.

River and Riley were found by Porterville Animal control in deplorable condition. Completely emaciated, full of parasites and living in filth animal control seized them. They spent several months at the shelter gaining weight and getting healthy. Sadly once they were adoption ready the shelter was inundated with dogs. So many dogs poor River and Riley were on the euthanasia list. Shelter staff were desperate to save their lives and reached out far and wide to find someplace safe for these two to land. We saw their pleas and knew we could help. No one wants to see dogs that have overcome so much euthanized simply due to space. Both River and Riley scored an amazing foster home with a trainer who is addressing their training needs. They are not bonded but enjoy each others company and do well together. They could be adopted together or separately.

River is a sweet boy who can be nervous in new situations and with new people. He’s catching on to training quickly. He has good leash skills and is great when crated. He’s both dog and people friendly and although shy wants to please and be friends so bad. Riley is a work in progress. Shes more confident in new situations than River but can be insecure, clingy and gets very excited. She is just now learning what dog manners are. No one ever taught her and we are trying to make up for that lost time. Shes good with Riley but is insecure with unfamiliar dogs. With consistency we know she’ll learn all the skills she never had the opportunity to learn and be the awesome dog we know she can be. These incredibly lucky pups would love to move on to the next chapter of their lives either together or separately. They so deserve wonderful families who will love them like they weren’t loved before. If their story speaks to you please consider making one or both of them part of your family.

Here’s what you need to know about adopting a cat or dog from Marley's Mutts:

  • Each adoptable pet will be introduced on Facebook

  • Each pet will have its own profile here on the website

  • All pets will be spayed or neutered

  • All pets will be micro-chipped and shots will be up-to-date

  • Each pet has their own application to complete—make sure you use the right one (linked from their bio)

It’s important to us that each pet goes not just to a great home but to the “right” home. Our foster parents work with each pet to get to know them and their needs.

We try hard to list all of the pertinent info about each pet on the site so you can choose the pet that will fit with your family/lifestyle. If you don’t see a specific pet on the site, he/she is not ready for adoption. Please be patient and wait until the bio is listed. We don’t decide on a “first come, first served” basis but rather on a “who’s the very best fit.” So, don’t panic.

It’s not a quick process. We receive dozens of applications for each pet so please be patient. If you’re shortlisted you’ll be contacted as soon as possible.

If selected to meet one of our pets and you currently have pets, you’ll be asked to do an in-person pet intro; we don’t do the long-distance adoption thing. If you live out of town, plan a fun road trip to meet the pet in person.

Don’t be discouraged if your application is not selected. Remember, we get a lot of them! Trust us, the best fit for you is coming.

If you’re lucky and you do adopt a super amazing pet from Marley’s Mutts, don’t ever hesitate to reach out to us for training, medication, or behavior questions. We’re here for you, and your pet.
